SHILLONG: The dome of the under-construction new Meghalaya Assembly building collapsed late on Monday night. However, fortunately there was no loss of lives in the incident.

According to construction workers staying at the site, they heard a loud noise at around 12:30-12:45 am.

Executive Engineer of PWD (Building), Ransom Sutnga informed that as per analysis, the dome collapsed due to faulty design.

"The dome was a heavy structure, perhaps too much heavy for the columns and the beams to bear. This resulted in the entire structure coming down," Sutnga, who visited the site, told reporters on Sunday.

He said that the design for the Assembly building was vetted by IIT Roorkee.

The Executive Engineer said that after the collapse of the dome, now a simpler design will be made in its place.

He also informed that it will take at least two weeks to clear the debris caused by the collapse of the dome.

Sutnga also said that the collapse of the dome will delay completion of construction works of the Assembly building by eight months.

It may be mentioned that the construction of the Assembly building started in June, 2019 and there were plans to hold the Autumn session of the Assembly session in September this year.
